A - Children ages 5-7 years by August 1, 2019 are eligible to play flag football.
- Stripe Rule - For safety reasons and to promote proper fundamental and developmental skills, players weighing over the following criteria will have a stripe on their helmet. This means that a player with a stripe will play between the tackle and will not carry the ball.
- 5-6 year olds weighing over 71 pounds
- 7 year olds weighing between 64-70 pounds
- Any 7 year old weighing more than 70 pounds must move up to tackle in the first week.
- There is no maximum weight for 5-6 year old stripers.
- Players must weigh in each week before a game, wearing a minimum of socks, underwear, athletic supporter, game pants with knee pads, and game jersey. All players are allowed one pound per week for growth allowance.
A - $225 for early bird registration (registration forms must be completed online and payment made by April 13, 2019 to receive early bird rate); $250 if paid after April 13, 2019. Fees include the use of equipment and uniforms. Each player receives a game jersey, game pants, practice jersey, flag helmet, registration t-shirt, one mouth guard, and trophy. Each team will receive $15 per player to use towards an end of season party.
Q - What equipment must I provided?
A - You will provide football cleats and a protective cup. It is recommended to purchase additional mouth guards as the kids tend to chew them. Equipment provided by the Panthers will be distributed at practice.
Q - When does the season start and finish?
A - The flag football season generally runs from late July to October.
Q - How many games are there?
A - BGYFL schedules eight regular season games for each team. Generally, four home games are played at Doerhoefer Park in Downers Grove, and four away games are hosted by other BGYFL teams. There are no play-offs. However, Panthers does host a Flag bowl during week nine that they may participate in.
Q - What about practices?
A - Practice typically begins the last week of July and runs Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday until school starts. These practices are held at O'Neill Middle School, 635 59th St., Downers Grove from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM.
Players should wear their helmets, a t-shirt, shorts, athletic supporter, mouth guard, and cleats. Please bring a large jug of water. Insect repellent is also recommended.
Once school starts, practice moves to two days per week. You will be notified of practice days and location by your head coach.
Q - Who are our opponents?
A - We play towns that have flag football programs affiliated with the Bill George Football League. The towns include Lombard, Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Bartlett, Elk Grove, and West Chicago.
Q - If my child does not like playing flag football, can I get a refund?
A - Refunds requested before football equipment has been issued will be refunded the paid registration fee, minus $25, and minus any discounts given at the time of registration. For refunds requested after football equipment has been issued, 50% of the paid registration fee will be refunded upon return of all equipment.
No requests for registration fee refunds will be accepted after the Second Monday in August for any reason.
